This is a great question that a lot of people ask; first I will answer the question and then explain why you have a hot roof, and why it should not transfer into your attic and how that is possible.  Even though you might be thinking of course your roof is hot because it is hot outside or because they sun is shinny on it.  Even though those might be causes, the reason your roof keeps a higher temperature has a lot to do with what is under it and how it is vented.
   First let’s start with the hot roof question, why?  There are only three ways heat can be transferred which we will talk about in other FAQ and answer independently, but they are Direct heat, Convective Heat and Radiant heat, and unless all three ways are dealt with then your roof will also be hotter than it should be.  
     Let’s take an 85 degree day in Virginia and look at tests we did on a roof that had asphalt shingles.  We tested the shingles and it was over 150 degrees and then we tested the attic and it was 150 degrees.  Even though Asphalt shingles are heat sink, which means they take in and hold the heat for hours, even they can be fixed if you will with proper ventilation.  When I say proper ventilation I do not mean by code or with basic soffit and ridge vents that can be bought at a big box store.  I mean real proper non-industry standard ventilation.  
    The main reasons Roofs stay hot because most of the time is because the attic is not vented properly.  However the real truth about a hot roof is that it is fine to have a roof surface that is hot, (and when I say hot I mean less than 150 degrees) as long as you are venting underneath it and the attic to keep the hot air that the roof creates moving away from the roof and escaping.
    We took that same roof that had a surface temperature of 150 degrees and changed the attic which was also 150 degrees into an attic that was 103 degrees at the top and only 96 degrees at the base of the attic and that was on a day that was 96 degrees outside air temperature.
