Описание к видео YEAR 12 ART EXHIBITION exploring mental illness 🎨

Hello! ✨
I hope you like this video!
After two years of work, I finally put up my pieces for my final Year 12 Exhibition! The theme I was exploring was mental illness, so please be aware that I will be talking about aspects of mental illness in the video.

I don't think I mentioned it in the video but I hung the now CLEAN skulls from the ceiling with red string...
Also here are some more in depth explanations of most of my pieces, I struggle to talk on the spot so I didn’t do a great job 😅

Anorexic Rules:
This is a metaphor for ‘Anorexia’ from learning about the psychological position many sufferers find themselves in. The subject is cloaked in the feathers of a crow and could be trying to hide the extremity of her condition. The bright green birds represent the world around the subject; there is life and freedom all around her, though she might not be able to see it. The ribbons (red: warning) have the rules many people suffering from anorexia follow. They are attached to the branch however they are not holding her down. This shows how she could just fly away; however she finds herself curled on the branch, unable to leave, though it seems so simple.
A3 x 3
Each individual panel: 29.7 x 42 cm

The Ram:
I wanted to show the aggression, chaos and disorder sufferers can experience in a vicious cycle. The ram is a symbol of aggression and the bold colours were used to make the piece have a strong presence. The decomposition in cubes shows the disarray a person suffering from mental illness might feel, and also shows how they have trouble putting things in order and making sense of the world around them. The red used represents madness, as well as how people with mental illnesses may lash out. The gold at the horns exaggerates them, making the ram look more aggressive, and it further gives the painting a bold presence.
60.5 x 45.5cm

Deteriorating:
This piece is a continuation of ‘The Ram’ where the focus lies more on the aggression of mental illness and possibly the aggression someone suffering from mental illness could display. If you read it from left to right, it mainly represents the mind of a person affected by mental illness deteriorating over time.
103 x 63 cm

Inside Out:
Though it is most interesting to hear others’ interpretations of this piece, I took inspiration from my Biology studies. I thought of abstracting a representation of blood cells, connective tissue and veins on thin rice paper. I made this after exploring and learning more about anorexia and imagining someone being so thin that you can see everything on the inside. I thought painting on such thin and delicate paper would emphasise how fragile a person suffering from anorexia can become.
210 x 30.5 cm

Isolation/ Empty:
This piece is focused on depression. The subject is sat simply in the frame and is meant to look melancholy and thoughtful. The eyes being ‘the window to the soul’ were painted black as a way of showing a lack of connection to represent the isolation a sufferer might be feeling or experiencing with this mental illness. The red surrounding the subject emphasises the crushing emotions they could be feeling.
40.5 x 30.5 cm

Schizophrenia:
I wanted to represent schizophrenia and how I have always interpreted it. The woman represents the person affected by the sickness while the dark creature on her shoulder is a representation of schizophrenia. I have always seen the sickness as something horrible that is latched on to the person; I wanted to emphasise this, show vulnerability and visually represent what I
imagine the person might be feeling.
A3
29.7 x 42 cm

As I explored the topic of mental illness, I became increasingly passionate and curious to continue to learn more. I also find that mental illness can still be stigmatised and I was partly hoping to bring more attention to the subject and allow people to explore it themselves. Managing to bring more awareness to mental health and its effects through my exhibition would give me a great sense of achievement.

Oof.. that was long,
I'll see you in the next video! ❤️
