Marcelo Garcia also known as ‘Marcelinho’, is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Master Fabio Gurgel, who competes for the Alliance BJJ academy. Having won 5 world jiu jitsu tournaments and 4 times the ADCC (two of the most important tournaments in jiu jitsu), Garcia is widely considered one of the best grapplers in the world, while his general demeanor made him one of the most beloved athletes by the BJJ community. Marcelo Garcia has also been featured in BJJHeroes top 10 Best Grapplers of All Time list.

Alliance Jiu Jitsu is THE most successful Jiu-Jitsu team in the history of the sport, the Academia Alliance has a brilliant list of achievements with 8 successive World titles as a team (from 2008 to 2015) to add to two previous World trophies achieved in the 1990s (98 & 99). The academy suffered from internal problems at the turn of the century, seeing most of its black belt team leaving to form rival organizations. This event had Alliance spending a few years in the sidelines of the World IBJJF podium, but being the colossus it proved to be, the team came back to life with the “General” Fabio Gurgel, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva and Romero Cavalcanti as the leaders of the group. Since it’s rebirth as a force in the sport, Alliance Jiu-Jitsu has set the standard within the new age of professionalized BJJ through talent, hard work, and strong logistics.

Thales Leites (born 6 September 1981) is a Brazilian former mixed martial artist best known for competing in the middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship from team Nova Uniao. Nova Uniao Regarded as one of the top jiu jitsu academies in the world, Nova União has busted into MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in the later years through fighters like Renan “Barão”, José Aldo, Jussier “Formiga” and many others. The team led by Wendell Alexander and André Pederneiras has been at the forefront of jiu jitsu and was regarded as one of the top 3 BJJ academies in the world at the turn of the millennium, with 2 team world titles by 2002. Since the shift to MMA, the dominance in the jiu jitsu world toned down, though Nova União is still considered to be one of the best academies in the game with very strong affiliated academies throughout the world such as Kimura in Natal (Brazil), Fernando Boi Team in Goiania (Brazil), Robson Moura Association (USA), Gustavo Dantas JJ Association (USA) and many others.
