A powerful explosion rocked the city of Zhytomyr, in Ukraine, killing at least two people and sending up a large plume of smoke on Wednesday.

According to Vitalii Bunechko, Head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, the explosion also injured at least 15 people

No air raid alert was issued prior to the blast. Local officials believe the explosion took place at an industrial warehouse in the village of Berezyna.

Witnesses reported two consecutive blasts, with the first causing widespread damage to nearby villages — shattering windows, damaging roofs, and destroying property.

The Zhytomyr City Council confirmed that the explosion occurred at a gas station on the highway heading toward Kyiv, beyond the city’s ring road. Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene and are continuing to respond.

Traffic on the M06 Kyiv–Chop highway remains restricted in both directions as emergency crews, law enforcement, and medical personnel work at the site. Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the blast.
