The groaning sounds of this emaciated female seal and pierced right through us. She was caught in a painful loop of snoek fishing line, slowly slicing into her neck over weeks or months. She had grown weak, vulnerable, and probably terrified, only to be suddenly chased, netted, and restrained by humans.
We love the excitement about a successful intervention. But we also carry the weight of knowing that every rescue means an animal has already suffered too much. These are not heroic moments. They are damage control.
She didn’t deserve any of it.
