The 15th Annual
King Kamehameha Hula Competition Hula Auana Modern Dance
This Hula Competition is sponsored by the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage. It is held in honor of King Kamehameha, the first King of the Hawaiian Nation.
This program contains the 'Auana' Division, the modern style of dancing. This style of dancing is more playful than 'Kahiko', it has tenderness, sensuality, comedy and beauty.
The theme for 'Auana' this year are songs recorded by Genoa Keawe, in honor of her contributions to Hawaiian Music for more than 40 years. A special section of the program hi-lites 'Auntie' Genoa's singing as she performs for us along with her sons, and a grandson.
Genoa Keawe is a Living Treasure of Hawai'i.
