In the territory of the municipality of Apricena, southwest of the Gargano promontory, the ancient medieval settlement called "Castrum Paganum," or Castelpagano, at an altitude of about 546 m, rises as a sentinel of the Stignano valley.
The first description of the abandoned settlement, dating back to 1721, is given to us by Antonio Guidotti, in his estimate of the estates of the Brancia family.
The castle was spread over an area of more than 1,000 square meters and measured 45 m from east to west. The ruins consist of a wall about fifty meters long and no more than five feet high with two openings that probably must have been two doors with worked jambs.
tracing the vicissitudes of most settlements that arose in areas of difficult access for security reasons. The very derivation of the place name seems to be shrouded in as much uncertainty.
The appellation "pagan" probably derives from a cult that was practiced in situ, perhaps with very ancient roots. Indeed, a natural shelter with artifacts dating to the Bronze Age has been found in the limestone bank on which the màstio stands.
The first historical record of Castelpagano, dates back to the year 1095. It is a documentary trace that has as its object a dispute over the boundaries and civic uses between the abbey of S. Giovanni in Lama and the "homines castri pagani," where the abbot Benedict was forced to ask for the intervention of the Norman Henry, count of Monte S. Angelo.
Rainulfo, duke of Aversa, Roger II of Sicily, Lothair III, Frederick II of Swabia, are just some of the protagonists of a long and complex history of a village that was abandoned by most of its inhabitants in the early 1600s.
