Velcro and Hidden Pockets DIY - Stop pick-pocketing and loss!

See how we modified all of our clothing to help prevent theft from pick-pocketing as well as losing our stuff by it falling out of pockets.

We want clothing that will fit well, be comfortable and be practical while traveling with only 36L backpacks. We love the idea of the P3 (Pick Pocket Proof Pants), but they did not carry a style that worked for either of us. Instead of settling, we decided to find the best fitting pants, shorts and skorts (purchased new or already in our closet) and modify the pockets (or add them!) to have the best of both worlds.

Keep in mind that we have little to no sewing experience! We use a sewing machine (borrowed from a friend) but it could've been done by hand too.

Many travelers opt to have a money belt or neck strap. This is a good option and we may use one as well, but these are generally harder to get to and we don’t really want to be pulling these out for small purchases or items. It’s just not practical to keep your phone and keys in a money belt.

Every pocket is now outfitted with Velcro closures, even the ones that already have zippers. First, it prevents items in the pocket from sliding or falling out when sitting, moving, reclining, bending over, etc. Second, it makes it much more difficult for a thief to pick-pocket without being noticed. The Velcro is hard to separate on its own, but when you also have to get through a zipper, it's more likely they will move on to an easier mark.

We also outfitted both skorts by adding hidden pockets on the under shorts. Women‘s clothing generally has very few pockets and the ones they do have are too small. We used material from an old shirt and cut it to size and sewed it on the shorts. The pockets now fit a large iPhone, keys, paperwork etc and since it’s hidden under the skirt no one can see that anything is there!
