What is the trade-off between a fixed speed compressor and a variable speed compressor?

Randy Johnson of C&B Equipment discusses the difference between these two categories of industrial compressors, and what it means to the people who use them.

If the machine constantly runs at a certain RPM, it is a fixed speed compressor, and the flow is maintained by an inlet valve that opens and shuts as air is needed. Air flow is constantly available, and therefore energy use is consistent and predictable. They also come at a lower cost initially.

Variable speed compressors use a VFD drive to ramp-up the motor when air flow is needed, and decrease motor usage when it is not needed. The initial cost is higher than fixed-speed compressors, but since the motor powers down when not needed, the energy use is much lower, and the cost savings can be tremendous.
