Waitematā Station, formerly known as Britomart Station, serves as Auckland's central transport hub, seamlessly integrating rail, bus, and ferry services. Situated at the foot of Queen Street within the historic Chief Post Office building, the station was inaugurated in 2003 to bring rail access closer to the city's core and encourage public transport usage. In 2023, the station was officially renamed Waitematā to honor its proximity to the harbor and its significance in Māori heritage, with the name reflecting the harbor's calm, obsidian-like waters.

As part of the transformative City Rail Link (CRL) project, Waitematā Station is undergoing significant upgrades to transition from a terminus to a through-station, enhancing capacity and reducing travel times across the network. The station reopened in April 2021 after a four-year closure to facilitate the construction of twin rail tunnels beneath the Chief Post Office, a complex engineering endeavor. The surrounding area is also being revitalized, with the development of Te Komititanga plaza and the upgrade of Tyler Street, creating welcoming public spaces that reflect the area's cultural and historical significance.
