Each year, the Nobel Peace Center asks the peace prize laureates what we can do to help forward their work for peace. Nihon Hidankyo’s answer was clear: Help share our stories so they don’t die with us.

At the Nobel Peace Festival: A Message to Humanity, Kenta Gomi, a Japanese student living in Norway, adopted the testimony of Masako Wada – a memory she got from her own mother. The heartfelt moment culminated in a beautiful ceremony, where Kenta and Masako released a peace dove together before the people of Oslo.

The Nobel Peace Conference and Festival 2025 highlighted the hibakusha testimonies and carried their message to humanity forward: nuclear weapons must never be used again.

The Nobel Peace Prize 2024 was awarded to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo. The grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, received the prize “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again”.

This year also marks 80 years since two American atomic bombs killed an estimated 120 000 people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and injured just as many. Today, the nuclear powers are upgrading their arsenals and threats are being made to use nuclear weapons in ongoing wars. At this moment in human history, the stories of the Hibakusha reminds us that nuclear weapons are the most destructive weapons the world has seen.
