Описание к видео SWChris Does The Ice Bucket Challenge!

In order to wish my friend Loren a happy birthday, I had to take the Ice Bucket Challenge for the ALS Association! Also it sounded like a good way to rile up a couple of friends, named in the video! ;)

DONATE HERE:
To donate, go to http://www.alsa.org/ and click on the red Donate button in the top right-hand corner!

BEFORE DONATING
After I made my donation, it came to light that ALSA is a supporter of embryonic stem cell research, which is an ethically controversial type of research which harvests stem cells from human embryos and aborted fetuses. In 2013 they used $500,000 to fund a group that conducts its research using an embryonic stem cell line that started from the spinal cord of a baby who was electively aborted at eight weeks gestation. In other words, the research conducted by this group that ALSA funded depends upon the death of an innocent, yet-to-be-born human being.

8-week-old fetuses are genetically distinct from their parents; that means they are not a part of their mother, like an arm or a leg would be. They are a unique human animal, which if left alone in their natural environment--which at this stage of development is the human womb--would develop into a baby, a toddler, a child, a teenager, an adult, and then die, just like each one of us are doing. They are as human as we are in every morally and scientifically relevant way.

Furthermore, embryonic stem cell research has yet to produce a single viable treatment. Compare that with adult stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cell research, which have produced many viable experimental treatments for many different types of diseases and issues.

If you find it as troubling as I do that this type of research is being conducted and that your donation might support it, you can tell ALSA on the donation page that your donation should not be used for embryonic stem cell research, and they will honor that.

However, please consider donating to an organization like the John Paul II Medical Research Institute (http://www.jp2mri.org/mission.htm) that does not engage in embryonic stem cell research, or to a local ALSA chapter that you know does not engage in this practice rather than the national organization. Each is as dedicated to finding a cure for ALS as ALSA is. Thanks for reading!

From the ALSA website:
ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn’t until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease. Ending the career of one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, the disease is still most closely associated with his name. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
