The first thing that assaults the senses is the brutalist concrete, a massive presence that imposes itself upon nothingness. These structures were not built to be inhabited, but to dominate. They are perfect cubes, ninety-degree angles that defy the natural curvature of life. The landscape is dominated by these concrete cells, monuments to order that rise like gigantic tombstones in the midst of the gloom. For the Luminaries, the natural landscape is a disease; an uncontrolled growth that must be eradicated, and that is why they have designed their environment to be completely flat and sterile. The ground that is visible, black and shiny, is not ordinary asphalt, but an alloy of synthetic obsidian designed so that no Ecoist seed can take root. It is a surface made for water to run off, denying the earth the right to absorb the rain.
