⚾ THE RULE: Obstruction describes an act by a fielder, who is not in possession of the ball or in the process of fielding it, that impedes the baserunner's progress.

Obstruction is a rule in Major League Baseball (MLB) to protect base runners and ensure fair play between offense and defense. It's when a fielder illegally hinders a runner from advancing on the basepaths—without possession of the ball or not actively fielding it.
⚾ fielding specifically refers to the act of trying to catch or stop a batted ball—not a thrown ball. A fielder blocking a runner’s path while trying to catch a throw (not a batted ball) is not considered to be "fielding"... Unless the umps feel it is under this rule?
⚾ The term "impedes" is broad and ultimately comes down to the umpire’s judgment. It doesn't require physical contact. Just causing the runner to slow down, hesitate, or alter their path is enough to be ruled obstruction.
