When patients present for abdominoplasty surgery, we feel that there's no question that the results are improved when they're near their ideal body weight. In addition, we also feel that the complication rate is actually lower when patients are near their ideal body weight. For these reasons, we request that patients be within 10% of their ideal body weight before proceeding with surgery. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. We see a lot of patients who present for abdominoplasty who are overweight. Many of these patients have tried to lose weight and they've been unsuccessful at losing weight.

Despite this, we feel that these patients still benefit from abdominoplasty surgery. In many of these patients, the health implications of having abdominoplasty are significant and for these people, the benefits can be tremendous. For this reason, we prefer to evaluate each patient on an individual basis. We encourage patients to lose weight prior to surgery, but if they have lost weight, we like to have their weight be stable for at least three months before proceeding with surgery. We realize that losing weight can be very, very difficult, and for this reason, we encourage patients to be in an organized weight loss program.

Despite this, patients still have difficulty losing weight. We therefore tell patients that it's possible that they could lose weight after their surgical procedure and this might ultimately result in the need for revisional surgery. For this reason, we think it's very important that patients discuss their weight and their weight loss plans with their surgeon before proceeding with abdominoplasty surgery.
