Love On The Spectrum's Abbey: I Always Felt Alone - storybooth stars

Abbey Romeo – one of the stars of Netflix’s Love On The Spectrum – wants to share her story about Autism and how it impacted her life.

Abbey was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 ½. When she was 3, she developed something called echolalia, and she would often repeat words that her mom would say. When she went to preschool, she wasn’t able to talk to other kids and express herself. She felt like words would get stuck in her head, and her brain wouldn’t be let her communicate with the other kids. She also started to put dangerous school items in her mouth, so her school thought it would be safest for Abbey to have an aide. As helpful as it was to have an aide by her side, Abbey’s teacher, Ms. Beverly, often made her feel like the “different” kid for having an aide. Ms. Beverly didn’t want to learn about Autism or make any adjustments for Abbey. She would make Abbey and her aide line up after the entire class, highlighting Abbey’s differences and making her feel “other.”

When Abbey went to middle school, she was more aware of the fact that she was “different” from the other kids. She still struggled to get the right words out of her head and communicate with her peers. This is when she started to identify with Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Both Abbey and Ariel struggled to feel “part of the world,” and they both faced challenges when they tried to talk to their peers. Finally, Abbey found someone in the “outside world" that she could relate to.

After many years of speech therapy and hard work, Abbey is finally at a point where she feels confident in her abilities and ready to take on the world! She is so proud of all the work she’s accomplished, and she hopes to share her struggles with Autism with the world so more people can understand what it’s really like to have Autism. She used to say to herself, “I Always Felt Alone.” But, now, she’s surrounded by wonderful friends and fans who make her feel like she truly is part of the world! We are storybooth.
