Allergic Rhinitis is a common medical problem, and its incidence is increasing in our country.
Though seemingly a harmless disease it causes untold hardship to the patient, physical discomfort and personal misery as well as loss of work days on the days of an "Allergy attack".
Common symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis are sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching and redness, eye watering and itching.
The symptoms start off after exposure to an allergen. Exposure to an allergen releases Histamine which is responsible for most of the symptoms of allergy.
There are two common "Allergy Seasons" - Spring and Autumn - in India this is usually during the months of February - March and then October.
Common human allergens are House dust mite, dust, pollen, mould (Fungus), insects like cockroach, some food items (egg protein, yeast, gluten, lactose) etc.
The current forms of treatment for Allergic Rhinitis include avoidance, oral medication, nasal sprays and gels etc.
There was thought to be no "Cure".
However, with the advent of the new Immunotherapy/ Desensitization treatment, there is hope that some Allergy patients can be cured of their allergies.
This is how we proceed -
The patient presents to our Centre where after history taking a simple blood test including IgE estimation is done.
In case the IgE is elevated the patient is subjected to a 'Skin Prick Test' using many common allergens.
The skin prick test picks up some suspected allergens.
The patient is then treated using extracts of these allergens to cause a desensitization reaction to these chemicals.
Desensitization can be done in 2 ways
- SCIT - Subcutaneous Immunotherapy
- SLIT - sublingual Immunotherapy
the treatment is generally safe and used for a prolonged period - 2-3 years or so.
This causes the Allergic Rhinitis patient to be "Cured" of her allergies.
