Northeastern Gaul and Britain had been in close touch for generations, and their economies, politics, and cultures were all entwined. Julius Caesar, a Roman general, and statesman stated in his memoirs that the Britons had aided the Gauls in their resistance to his armies. Other Gauls fled to Britain as fugitives during the Roman invasion, while some Britons crossed the water to fight for the Gauls. As a result, Caesar took the decision to invade Britain late in the summer of 55 BC.
While ships and men were recruited and discussions were held between the Romans and diplomats from various British tribes, information about the island was acquired from local merchants and by sending out a scout ship. Despite these preparations and Caesar's stay in Britain, neither invasion was meant to take the island permanently.
