HACKERS JUST TOOK DOWN ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST ADVANCED TELESCOPES

Chile's Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Observatory has been targeted by a hack that has knocked its website down and caused it to cease all observations, according to local authorities.

In the following, email services were also restricted, demonstrating the hack's wide reach.

ALMA, located at almost 16,000 feet above sea level on a plateau in the Chilean Andes, is one of the world's most powerful and sophisticated radio telescopes. Notably, ALMA contributed to the first picture of a black hole in 2019, as part of a joint effort that joined radio observatories throughout the globe to construct the Event Horizon Telescope.

ALMA's amazing arsenal of 66 high-precision antennas, each over 40 feet in diameter, was not damaged, according to the observatory, nor was any of the scientific data acquired by those equipment.

ALMA's expertise in monitoring the light of the universe's colder components, particularly gas and dust, makes it useful. As a result, ALMA is an excellent contender for chronicling the interesting forms of planets and stars as they emerge from gas clouds.

According to the European Southern Observatory, ALMA's principal operators, since it became fully operational in 2013, it has become the world's biggest ground-based astronomical project.

So ALMA being down is a troubling prospect, particularly for the thousands of astronomers across the globe who depend on its observations and the 300 professionals who work there. Although getting it up and running is definitely a priority, the observatory said in a subsequent tweet that "it is not yet feasible to determine a timetable for a return to routine activity."

There is currently no information available on who the hackers were or how they carried out the assault. Their reasons are also unknown.
