The gates were opened on Sunday on another lavish residence in the Carpathian mountains used by Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich. The residence, known as 'Synohora', means blue mountains and stands proudly at the foot of a forest near the village of Huta, about 650 kilometres from the capital Kiev. Local reports say millions of dollars have been spent by Yanukovich to repair and possibly extend the property. As well as from a massive residence by the side of a small lake, the property has various enclosures with bears, pheasants and wild boar. Hundreds of Ukrainians flocked to Novi Petrivtsi to see the residence, set in grounds half the size of Monaco. "We want to see everything here, to see where our money went, and what our people were working for. I was working abroad for 10 years and we are working for him so he can rule and look at all this beauty," said one visitor outside the gate of the winter residence. Parliament quickly voted on Sunday to strip Yanukovich the luxury 140-hectare estate, known as Mezhyhirye, 25 kmoutside Kiev where he kept luxury homes, a private zoo and a helipad, to be returned to the state within 10 days. The 63-year-old fled into hiding on Saturday as the turmoil of three months confrontation with his people caught up with him. Report by Claire Mewse.
