The one leader who changed the country’s political course in a revolutionary way was Gandhian socialist Jayaprakash Narayan. Significantly, JP, as he was popularly called, never sought power for himself. JP’s call for ‘Sampoorna Kranti’ starting with a students movement against rampant corruption, unemployment and systematic weakening of democratic institutions back in 1974 led to the imposition of the Emergency. The movement scripted the fall of the Indira Gandhi government and led to the formation of the first non-Congress government in the country.
