Celebrate the opening of Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living, features late-night gallery hours, live music in the courtyard, full bar, and free food.

“Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living” is one of the most extensive Hammer biennials to date, in terms of the number of participants, curator Ramírez says.

Since its launch in 2012, Made in L.A. has become one of the country’s most closely watched recurring exhibitions, launching artists to greater mainstream recognition and helping to cement Los Angeles’s place as an art capital. Free exhibit opens OCT 1 – DEC 31, 2023.

Titled “Acts of Living,” this year’s show focuses on how art is inseparable from everyday life and includes a mix of new commissions and historical works from 39 up-and-coming and prolific artists. Under the curation of Diana Nawi and Pablo José Ramírez, there’s a playful but poignant perspective on display from many of the artists being showcased here. Using squares of soil sourced from 144 L.A. neighborhoods, Jackie Amézquita drew landmarks and diasporic communities from each area. Christopher Suarez created a ceramic replica of Long Beach and the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive made an imitation break room that lets you look through art archives. Guadalupe Rosales has combined Mesoamerican altars with contemporary rave culture, while Roksana Pirouzmand sorts through flying family photos in a small room with a window on one side that resembles her house and her grandmother’s house in Iran on the other.

ABOUT MADE IN L.A.
The Hammer’s biennial exhibition series Made in L.A. focuses exclusively on artists from Los Angeles with a primary focus on emerging artists. The Los Angeles biennial debuts new installations, videos, films, sculptures, performances, and paintings commissioned specifically for the exhibition and offers insight into the current trends and practices coming out of Los Angeles, one of the most active and energetic art communities in the world.

THE ARTISTS
The 39 artists on the list represent a broad swath of artists working in South California of varying ages, which a press release says highlights “a wide-ranging network of artistic affinities, legacies, and dialogues through intergenerational constellations formed through shared visual and material languages.”

About a quarter of the artists were born in the 1990s, with the youngest artist on the list being LA native Vincent Enrique Hernandez, who was born in 1998. On the opposite end of the spectrum, five artists are in their 70s or 80s, with the oldest artist on the list being Jessie Homer French, who was born in New York in 1940. French was included in the 2022 Venice Biennale’s main exhibition.

The full list of participants are: Marcel Alcalá, Michael Alvarez, AMBOS: Art Made Between Opposite Sides, Jackie Amézquita, Teresa Baker, Luis Bermudez, Sula Bermúdez-Silverman, Jibz Cameron, Melissa Cody, Emmanuel Louisnord Desir, Victor Estrada, Nancy Evans, Pippa Garner, Ishi Glinsky, Vincent Enrique Hernandez, Dan Herschlein, Jessie Homer French, Akinsanya Kambon, Kyle Kilty, Young Joon Kwak, Kang Seung Lee, Tidawhitney Lek, Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), Maria Maea, Erica Mahinay, Mas Exitos, Dominique Moody, Paige Jiyoung Moon, Esteban Ramón Pérez, Page Person, Roksana Pirouzmand, Ryan Preciado, Devin Reynolds, Miller Robinson, Guadalupe Rosales, Christopher Suarez, Joey Terrill, Chiffon Thomas, Teresa Tolliver.
