Steve Andrews talks about the Ishmael trilogy of books by the late Daniel Quinn. Ishmael is a gorilla and our teacher and he explains how the world got in the mess we are in today. Quinn divided the peoples of the world into "The Leavers," who are all indigenous and tribal people, and "The Takers," who are the city building, empire creating, colonizing, war making, civilized nations that have a "Mother Culture" we have all been brought up in. The Takers also created the patriarchal religions, and all of this happened after the Dawn of Civilization, only several thousand years ago. Yet there were countless Leaver people living on the planet long before this. They were hunter gatherers, herders and small scale farmers. Quinn says we are not taught about this time which he calls the "Great Forgetting." In contrast, the Takers employ what Quinn calls "Totalitarian Agriculture." Steve Andrews explains that for him reading Quinn´s books answered questions he had about the world and he recommends them very highly indeed.
The other two books in the trilogy are The Story of B and My Ishmael.
