Aum Shinrikyo is one of the most chilling and complex modern cults ever convincing scientists, med students and engineers to carry out an attack that hurt up to 6000 people killing 13 in the one of worst terror attacks in modern Japanese history.

Asahara, it's leader became obsessed with Biblical prophecies. It was at this point he began to profess the world end coming and only his followers would survive and repopulate the earth. He began to present himself as Devine (a reincarnation of Shiva, “Tokyo’s Christ”).

Asahara was indicted on 17 charges ranging from murder to illegal production of weapons and drugs. In late 1996, Ashara admitted responsibility for the sarin attack but said he was not personally involved in the crime, saying he had been “instructed by God” to shoulder the blame. The trail which became dubbed as Trial of the Century would last for 8 years and Asahara was found guilty of masterminding the attack and sentenced to death in 2004.

This cult was one of the worst in Japans History.
