A mechanism that is relatively self-operating especially: robot .A machine or control mechanism designed to follow automatically a predetermined sequence of operations or respond to encoded instructions.

There are four major families of automaton :
• Finite-state machine.
• Pushdown automata.
• Linear-bounded automata.
• Turing machine.
Automatic photo printing machines, artificial card punching machine, human detection and reorganization machine etc. are the real time examples of automata.
