Web development is one the of three big uses of Python. While we're not diving into web servers in this video, I'm starting to dabble with utilizing web request.

HTTP is HyperText Transfer Protocol; this is a request/response protocol that two machines use to request and serve web pages. In this video we use pip to install the requests module for python, and use it to make some web requests. While we can use the Python requests module to request web pages and scrape data off of them, scraping isn't particularly efficient, and in some cases it's discouraged by the web app owners.

A good use case is to leverage this module to request resources on a web REST API. An API is an application that is designed for programmatic consumption. In this video we discover a REST API that serves JSON data and manipulate the output data to use in our code. Watch how to use an open REST API to create a reusable function in your application with python that can request an API resource, parse the output JSON as a dictionary, and integrate the output with your app logic.

It's a powerful pattern to request web APIs to include external data and functionality in your python applications.
