THE RECSPIN RECORD RECCELEROMETER - ACCELEROMETER TO MIDI TURNTABLE

This is a quick demonstration of the the "The Recspin Record Reccelerometer". A little sloppy but it's only my second time using it.

I had an idea to manipulate the notes on my Vestax PDX3000 with an accelerometer to free my hands to skratch. A lot like the "Fretless Fader" by John Beez. At first I thought I would have to create it with a small computer like the arduino. I even planned a phone meeting with a friend of mine that's doing some cool arduino stuff in NY. It then dawned on me I could use my phone if the right app existed that would allow my phone to talk to Ableton.

After trying a few apps I found the right one app. Then I needed to get Ableton to talk to the PDX. The PDX is picky about the MIDI signal it receives. I thought for the longest time that my PDX didn't work with MIDI at all because every MIDI device I had couldn't talk to it. I had to find just the right device to output MIDI to it. Thanks to some info I found on “Fernando MIDI’s” channel, I figured out the right device.

I then needed to figure out a way to keep the note changes in key. The Scale device in Ableton didn't work. This was the hardest step for me. I tried everything under the sun. I finally realized I needed MAX for live and maybe I could find some MAX device that somebody already made to make my dream a reality. Well sure enough someone did and I found it after testing a bunch that didn’t work.

Finally my dream is a reality and it only took a few days and a few dollars. If there's enough interest I will post a tutorial on here with links to all the software and apps used.

I've been trying to do something like this for over a decade. Originally trying to change notes in Serato because I never owned a MIDI turntable. That being said, this definitely wouldn't be a reality without innovators like John Beez. This is not meant to replace the "Fretless Fader" and could possibly be used in conjunction with one, to create something really dope. The fretless fader is an elegant design and cool piece of musical hardware. I will be supporting him and if you like this system, you should too!
