In addition to listening, we often look at visual representations of sound to help us understand and shape audio through synthesis or other effects.

There are "five characteristics of sound": Pitch, Loudness, Timbre, Duration, and Spatial Location. And these characteristics that we perceive depend on sometimes complex relationships of what's going on with the physical properties of sound, including amplitude, frequency, phase, and periodicity.
