Vampires - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

Yugioh is easily the card game with the most variety in terms of visual and flavor design. From the cutesy Melffy to the edgy Dark Worlds, the game has something to offer to any and all players. As one might expect, the game draws a lot from popular culture, with almost every deck referencing something outside the card game. Obviously one of these decks is Vampires. One of the game’s oldest archetypes, this theme took a lot longer than most to gain a cohesive identity and become a proper archetype. However, with two waves of support, it seems that this deck has been scorched by sunlight without ever coming into the spotlight. So why did this happen? How did such a popular icon as vampires completely fall on their face when trying to form a cohesive deck?
