In the budget template you can use the bucket system to track individual accounts that you create. Many people carry cash in a system known as “Cash Envelopes”. Cash Envelopes is a very popular method of dividing your cash out as soon as you are paid and putting it toward certain expenses. If that works for you, then great! Keep doing it! But, I am not a fan of carrying around cash in general. That is why in my Budget Template I introduce the Bucket system!

Buckets help you divide your income into categories just like cash envelopes do. They are very much related and work generally the same way. However, buckets in the budget template make it so that you can keep all of your money in your checking account or on a prepaid debit card. At a simple glance, you can look at a certain category like “Food” and see how much you have in your bucket, and then control your spending around that number. The best part is that my wife can check the number on one side of town, and I can check the number on the other side of town, and we don’t have to pass over an envelope full of cash.
