​All Saints' Church in Babworth, Nottinghamshire, is a historic and architecturally significant Church of England parish church with deep roots in both English religious history and the early story of the Pilgrims.​

🏰 Historical Origins
The church dates back to the 15th century, though the site may have earlier ecclesiastical origins. It features classic Gothic architecture, including a west tower with an embattled parapet and crocketed pinnacles, a nave, chancel, north aisle, vestry, and a south porch. The building underwent restorations in 1859–62 and again in 1877–78 under architect J. Loughborough Pearson .​

Inside, the church houses 19th-century stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe and intricately carved furniture by Robert "Mousey" Thompson, known for his signature mouse carvings .​

📜 Ownership and Advowson
The church's advowson (the right to appoint clergy) changed hands multiple times over the centuries. In 1295, it belonged to Robert de Swillington. By 1365, it had passed to Sir Thomas de Grendon, who sold it to Sir William Trussbutt. Trussbutt transferred it to Newstead Priory, which retained it until 1531. Subsequently, it was sold to John Hercy of Grove, and later, in 1674, to John Simpson .

✝️ Richard Clyfton and the Pilgrims
One of the church's most notable figures was Richard Clyfton, who became rector in 1586. A prominent Separatist, Clyfton led a congregation that rejected the Church of England's practices. After being deprived of his position in 1605, he joined the Scrooby Congregation and eventually emigrated to Amsterdam. Clyfton's teachings influenced key Pilgrim leaders, including William Brewster and William Bradford, who later sailed on the Mayflower to establish Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts .​
