The height of the average Chinese man has increased by 3.5 inches over a 35 year period... and seems like they’re growing faster than the rest of the world...

This was observed in a study by The Lancet in 2019 when they looked at average height increase from 1985 to 2019.

In fact, even during the 5 year period from 2014 to 2019, Chinese men gained height by 0.5 inches... that’s an inch in every 10 years.

By comparison, Indian men (aged 18 to 25) have only gained about 0.4 inches in height during the 10 years between 2005 to 2015 as per ICMR.

Women by comparison gained 0.2 inches in the same time period.

Which means if you’re 30 years younger than your parents, as an Indian man, you should ideally be 1.2 inches taller than your father... and as a woman, you should be 0.6 inches taller than your mother.

And this increase in height is based on:

decades of good nutrition to a country with a diet with enough protein
better healthcare in early childhood
improved hygiene and living standards overall along with urbanization

While we look at Happiness Index and Per Capita GDP to look at overall quality of life in different economies... this as a metric seems so holistic by comparison and it’s funny what data can tell us.

Anyway, if you’re interested, the global average is 5’7”... China is at almost at 5’8” and India lags behind at 5’5”
