But...it makes it impossible to remove the shitty software that comes with it, and at the same time makes it very difficult to format the entire hard drive.

This is the case with MOST external hard drives. With the ClickFree Automatic Hard Drive, there is an enclosure that houses a normal internal hard drive, with a proprietary SATA controller attached.

This video will show you a pretty easy and cool way to remove the enclosure without causing any damage to the hard dive it self.
