Exploring retail gems (below Samuel's Fortress) in the historic village of Ohrid, North Macedonia

Have you ever traveled a short distance and felt like you've just stepped back in time? Last month, my group and I took a one-day trip from Albania, traversing over breathtaking scenery to the enchanting village of Ohrid, North Macedonia.

Just wow!!

I wanted to set the stage (in this video) so you can appreciate the beauty we experienced in just a few short hours.

Upon arriving in Ohrid, visiting Samuel's Fortress, the ancient theater, and taking in the stunning views of Lake Ohrid, it felt like a time warp. It felt incredibly real, earthy, and real, with locals who are deeply proud of their Balkan culture.

As we strolled through the village, I was fascinated by how some fundamentals of retail are universal. Restaurants strategically took up most of the lakefront property, offering guests postcard-like views over a meal or drink. Many stores on the busiest retail streets were mixed-use, with residents living above them.

I was intrigued by the blend of cultures in the food and restaurant options. Ambrosia, a prime example, offered authentic / natural Turkish food, products, and candies. This is a nod to the history of the Ottoman Empire's influence in the Balkan region over 500 years ago.

Wrapping up our visit, I was impressed by the more modern supermarket chain we discovered as we prepared to leave Ohrid – named Kipper Supermarket. Originating around 15 years ago, they now boast about 40 stores across North Macedonia. Talk about retail growth and market penetration!
