New England Living TV: A Home for Generations in Newtown, CT

Summer and Pete, homeowners in Newtown, Connecticut, expand their farmhouse to accommodate their young, growing family. While the renovation doubled the size of the home, they maintained historic elements from the original 18th century structure throughout: wood beams line the ceiling, chestnut wood makes a fireplace mantel, which rests on stone from the found on the surrounding land.

The setting is truly New England. Newtown, in the southwest corner of the state, has a rich history and a charming downtown with shops, restaurants and cafes. Summer and Pete’s property has 63 acres with apple orchards, a pond, stone terrace, and a large barn for 16 horses. More than half of the property is covered in wooded trails, ideal for horseback riding.

In the bedroom carved into the wood framing is a quote: “Family ties are precious threads; No matter where we roam; They draw us close to those we love; And pull our hearts toward home.”

“The house is ours and we live here now, but it is going to be a generational property,” says Summer, who, along with her husband, wants to make sure the children know they are always welcome back home.
