This is a rough cut for the one hour prime time PBS special my team & I produced on PT Barnum and Barnum & Bailey circus for The American Experience. I post in now because some of the footage and still images are wonderful and unique. It took us forever to find these. A rough cut means that it is not a finished film but close to it.

These days there are many old times circuses left. Especially at the level of the great PT Barnum and his Barnum and Bailey Circus. So although this is not a finished film it is amazing to watch this archival footage and hear this story. The circus is somewhat controversial today regarding the treatment of animals etc. When I was a kid and my parents took me to New York City to see the "three ring" circus, I was both thrilled and scared to see people flying up in the air and doing other things that looked extraordinarily dangerous. I asked my parents about the animals and they didn't have a good answer for how they were being treated.

Whatever you feel about the circus, this old footage is now American history. And whatever I feel, PT Barnum and his Barnum and Bailey Circus were great theatrical impresarios and would do most anything to find and bring in extraordinary characters who performed for their audiences across America and around the world.
