Let's understand this through the story of a guy. This gentleman needed to gain weight quickly, so what did he do? Apart from his normal meals, he added 200 grams of peanuts every day, which amounts to 1200 calories. And after 2 months, his weight increased by 8 to 10 kilos. However, when we talk about body composition, he mostly gained fat because of excessive caloric surplus, and irrespective of how good your training and other muscle-building variables are, if you’re in excess surplus, most of it will anyway convert to fat. You will gain muscle but that will just be marginal. So, people aiming for getting a broad body, will end up with a broad belly.

Now, this story was fiction, but the basics of science will remain the same. If you're desperate to gain weight quickly, be prepared for mostly fat gain. So, if you're okay with that, you can eat anything high in calories. But if the goal is to gain weight properly, meaning a little muscle and less fat, then a small surplus with the right amount of protein, progressive weight training, and patience is enough.
