Any travel research for things to do in Taupo New Zealand will likely feature the Huka Falls jet boat near the top. Despite a massive amount of iconic things to see and activity options the jet has held a spot on that list for as long as we can remember, so for this little Taupō roadie we knew it had to feature! But enter a new and even more hilarious contendor for the top spot — the doughboat on Lake Taupo!

Doughboats are essentially doughnut shaped boats that you take out on the lake. Armed with a bluetooth speaker, a heater, a radio and ideally some food (and or booze) you get to see Taupo from a different angle exploring on your lonesome. It's random, hilarious and one now one of our favourite things to do in Taupo!

So which would you pick? The calm of the doughboats humming along on Lake Taupo or the speed and adrenaline of the mighty Huka Jet boosting up the river?
