Businesses importing goods have been required to comply with a wide range of new regulations and systems in recent years following Brexit. What’s more, they’ve had to navigate supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic, international conflicts and climate.

Finding ways to manage new rules and requirements efficiently is therefore a key task for any importer.

Inward and outward processing are customs authorisations that enable international supply chains to operate more efficiently, and they are frequently used by manufacturers and importers.

Whether used for bringing in components or materials for use in the production of a particular good (inward processing), or for temporarily exporting goods for processing, repairs, or fixes (outward processing), these procedures enable businesses to better manage their customs and duty obligations while engaging in cross-border trade.

In a free webinar on 25 September 2024, a panel of leading trade and supply chain experts introduced how these authorisations operate, advising businesses on how they can most benefit from them both today and tomorrow.

The panel will include:

Ilona Kawka – advisory practice lead for imports at the Chartered Institute
Grace Thompson – UK public affairs lead at the Chartered Institute
Sylwia Nowak – global trade technology manager at Collins Aerospace

As part of the webinar, Kawka presented findings from a new report on the key changes that are due to take place in UK and EU trade that will particularly affect importers – including the UK’s Border Target Operating Model, the UK and EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs), as well as deforestation regulation and customs reform in the EU.

The webinar also introduced listeners to the Chartered Institute’s new advisory practice for imports. The practice, which is led by Kawka, offers advisory services on various aspects of importing including the Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) and inward processing.
