In this talk, we trace a dialogue between Watsuji Tetsurō’s ethics of betweenness (aidagara) and the In-Out Ontology’s field of entangled directionality.
Where Watsuji saw the human being as a rhythm between individuality and totality, In-Out Ontology reframes this as an ontological pulse between inward coherence and outward differentiation.
By reading Japanese relational ethics through the lens of Korean Confucian inward resonance, we rediscover East Asian thought not as a cultural contrast, but as a unified in-out dynamic of existence.

Watsuji Tetsurō (1889–1960) — Japanese philosopher who founded an ethics of aidagara (“betweenness”), emphasizing the relational nature of human existence (ningen sonzai). His Fūdo (風土, “Climate and Culture”) viewed ethics as a climatic rhythm between self and world.

In-Out Ontology (Kyoung-il Ko) — A contemporary ontological framework viewing all existence as arising from the entanglement of inward (coherent) and outward (differentiating) movements. It reinterprets East Asian metaphysics as the cosmic logic of in-out indistincts and their emergent directionality.
