I’ve been working with Guapo a lot since first getting him 2 months ago and in that time I’ve made a lot of progress in regards to socialising him.

I’ve used the technique of choice based handling which is where I essentially allow him to choose whether or not he wants to be picked up.

I offer myself as an extension of his environment in such a way that he always has the option to go elsewhere if he isn’t in a sociable mood. I feel this is very important when dealing with monitors as they are incredibly intelligent animals who can be quick to bolt if they feel threatened and believe me when I say they are very fast when they want to be.

With this video I’m hoping to show people that by being respectful of the animal’s space and giving it the choice in whether or not it wants to be handled, you can actually build some genuine trust between yourself and the animal.

As much as I understand the desire to just pick up something like an ackie because they are very cool, it’s vital to remember that they are highly intelligent and very observant and if you go about such things the wrong way they will continue to be distrustful and wary of you.

Respect your animals and they will respect you back!
