“Let’s get it done”: Alberta officials announce deal for new Calgary's Saddledome replacement | FULL

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek announced on Tuesday that officials have reached a deal in principle to replace the aging Scotiabank Saddledome with the Rivers District Masterplan, after a unanimous vote in January 2022.

"A great deal of work has taken place to bring us to this milestone day," Gondek said. “Thank you for engaging and participating in this game-changing project.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also said that the new arena will be “one of the greatest” arenas in North America and that it will ignite a sports entertainment and cultural scene. “Now to all my friends here today, it's time to do what Albertans and Calgarians are known for. Let's get it done,” Smith said.

Gondek and Smith were joined by president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) John Bean, Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley and Coun. Sonya Sharp on the site of the previously-agreed upon event centre in the East Village. The update came after six months of renewed negotiations.
