In a strange coincidence, exactly thirty years ago, the Election Commission was at the centre of things in Bihar's 1995 assembly elections, much like it is today with Rahul Gandhi's #VoteChori campaign. Helmed by T.N. Seshan, the messianic Chief Election Commissioner, who redefined the powers of the ECI, the polly body was then chief minister Lalu Yadav's enemy number one. Seshan postponed the election four times, suspended and dismissed officials at the slightest hint of deviation from the poll conduct, and had the whole administration and state economy on the edge, and Lalu Yadav fuming.
