Virtual Film Screening & Panel: Standing Above the Clouds

Co-hosted by Water Protector Legal Collective (WPLC) and Mauna Kea Education & Awareness (MKEA), we invite you to join us for this special virtual film screening of award-winning documentary, Standing Above the Clouds, followed by a panel discussion with MKEA Executive Director, Pua Case (Kanaka ʻoiwi), Film Director Jalena Keane-Lee, and WPLC Executive Director, Natali Segovia (Quechua).

STANDING ABOVE THE CLOUDS follows Native Hawaiian mother-daughter activists as they stand to protect their sacred mountain Mauna Kea from the building of the world’s largest telescope. When the massive Thirty Meter Telescope is proposed to be built on Mauna Kea, an uprising of kiaʻi (protectors) in Hawaiʻi and around the world dedicate their lives to protecting the sacred mountain from destruction. Beyond headlines and frontlines of land-protection and colonialism, the film explores intergenerational healing and the impacts of safeguarding cultural traditions.
