It is not a medical condition in itself but rather a symptom of an underlying issue within the vestibular system, which is responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation in the inner ear.

When the vestibular system becomes disrupted or malfunctions, it can send false signals to the brain about the body's position and movement, leading to the sensation of vertigo. This can be a distressing and disorienting experience for those affected.

Vertigo can be caused by various factors, including:

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): A common cause, usually triggered by changes in head position, such as rolling over in bed or looking up.

Meniere's Disease: A disorder of the inner ear that can cause vertigo, hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and a feeling of fullness in the affected ear.

Vestibular Neuritis: Inflammation of the vestibular nerve, often due to a viral infection, leading to sudden vertigo.

Labyrinthitis: Inflammation of the inner ear labyrinth, often caused by viral or bacterial infections.

Migraine-Associated Vertigo: Some individuals may experience vertigo as a symptom of migraines.
