A major concern arose after a Supreme Court–linked interpretation/order allowed land classified as below 100 meters in height to be treated as non-forest in certain contexts. The harsh reality is that nearly 90% of the Aravalli landscape falls below 100 meters, meaning vast forested areas suddenly became vulnerable to legal mining and large-scale cutting.
This decision has directly benefited mining companies, opening the door to stone crushing, illegal excavation, and commercial exploitation under the cover of legality. What gets ignored is the ecological role of the Aravallis. These hills act as a natural barrier against the hot, dust-laden winds of the Rajasthan Thar Desert. Without them, Delhi NCR faces stronger desert winds, worsening dust pollution, higher PM levels, and a dangerous rise in AQI.
The Aravallis also play a critical role in groundwater recharge. Their forests and soil structure allow rainwater to seep underground. Destroying them accelerates water scarcity, dries up aquifers, and pushes the region closer to a permanent water crisis. Additionally, the loss of green cover leads to a rise in temperature, intensifying heatwaves and making urban life increasingly unlivable.
In short, cutting the Aravalli Hills for short-term profit puts millions of lives at long-term risk. This is not just an environmental issue—it’s a public health emergency, a climate crisis, and a future survival problem for Delhi NCR.
