The Land in Two Worlds: A History of Long Island

Long Island has a long and unexpected history and importance in not only New York but all of America. From Paleolithic peoples of the last ice age to the Lenape, Shinnecock and others before colonization long island was caught between New England, New Netherland and later New York. During the revolution the defeat on long island tested George Washington, during the second world war long island was a center for aircraft production. In the twentieth century long island was at the forefront of a bold new American future but the twenty first century economic and cultural problems shook long islanders.
