Legend of Romulus and Remus

Origin

Romulus and Remus were twin brothers, sons of Rhea Silvia, a vestal virgin forced to remain chaste, and the god Mars, the god of war. Because of this “forbidden” pregnancy, King Amulius, who feared the children would claim the throne, ordered them to be eliminated.

The Miracle of the She-Wolf

The twins were placed in a basket and thrown into the Tiber River, which carried them to the area of the Palatine Hill. There they were found by a she-wolf, who nursed and cared for them. Later, a shepherd named Faustulus discovered them and raised them with his wife, Acca Larentia.

Youth and Vengeance

As adults, the brothers discovered their true origins. They gathered allies, defeated the tyrant Amulius, and restored the throne to their grandfather, Numitor.

Foundation of Rome

After these events, Romulus and Remus decided to found a new city near the place where they had been saved. However, they argued over:
• Which hill to choose (Romulus preferred the Palatine; Remus, the Aventine)
• Who should rule

To decide, they turned to auguries—signs from the gods interpreted through the flight of birds. The interpretation caused further conflict. In the fight that followed, Romulus killed Remus.

Birth of Rome

Romulus thus became the first king and founder of the city, which took his name: Rome. He fortified the Palatine Hill, established laws, and shaped the political organization of the new city.
