LA VIE PLATINÉE is a 1987 film from Cote d'Ivoire by Claude Cadiou... Mamady Keita played a character named "Kawa." Though not a major element of the overall plot, his role nevertheless was crucial to the film: Mamady performed as lead drummer for the KOTEBA ensemble of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Indeed, the complete 82-minute film dramatized that group's invitation to Paris, and their subsequent struggles to raise (successfully!) the necessary travel funds... I have uploaded each of the ensemble's 3 appearances separately, as well as this longer sequence that combines all three with excerpts of the opening credits, of the group's bus travel, and of their ultimate departure for Paris.

Surprisingly, this film source does not seem to be widely known among djembe students? The complete movie has over 100,000 views on YouTube, but the comments are all about the city of Abidjan, the country of Cote d'Ivoire, the choreography of Souleyman Koly, the actors and actresses (especially Nadia do Sacramento and Yves Zogbo Junior), the opening song by Salif Keita, remembrances and reminiscences of those times and that era, etc... Thus far, not a single connection to the comparatively minor role played by a man who in only a few brief years would commence yet another -- ever more spectacular! -- chapter of his life's work as the djembe drum's worldwide ambassador.

In 1986, Mamady moved to the Ivory Coast after quitting his roles as lead soloist (since the age of 15) and artistic director (since the age of 29) for Guinea's Djoliba National Ballet. In 1988, he would relocate to Belgium and release his first album: 1989's Wassolon. In another two years, Laurent Chevallier's movie Djembefola (1991) would propel Mamady, his instrument, and West African musical culture to worldwide recognition and acclaim. Not content to teach thousands of classes, play tens of thousands of shows, and publish dozens of albums, books and instructional videos, Mamady has gone on to found a series of music schools on every continent!
