What is a RAD? and how can it help your career?

The Resident Assistant Director (RAD) positions are two 12 month opportunities for early career theatre directors to be resident at the Donmar. Not only are they a chance for directors to develop their craft, but also to grow their understanding of how a theatre is run and develop their skills as
artistic leaders of the future.

The two RAD positions run simultaneously so they can alternate assisting on shows with working in the office as part of the staff team. They will each assist on three productions (which involves supporting the smooth running of rehearsals, tech and previews, alongside many other aspects of the production process) as well as working in the literary department (which involves script reading, creative research, co-ordination of freelance readers, and contributing to wider programming conversations).The aim is to give a rounded experience of all the different component parts of how a producing theatre runs, and the different skills and considerations involved in artistic leadership.

We hope this is both a training opportunity, and a chance for us to listen to and learn from the next generation of theatre-makers. The RADs are line managed by the Literary Manager and will receive additional pastoral support from the Talent Development Manager.
